Southwestern Music Festival

February 8 - 11, 2018

Welcome

Greetings on behalf of the Department of Music at Southwestern Adventist University. We are honored every year to host an exclusive Music Festival for High School and Academy musicians. The 2018 festival features four ensembles; symphony orchestra, saxophone ensemble, mass choir and honors choir.  In addition to the festival ensembles, elite musicians may audition for a chance to win a music scholarship.  Students that audition have the chance of being selected as a Scholarship Finalist and will have their transportation, food and lodging paid for and the opportunity to perform in a Showcase Recital on February 7, 2018 at Southwestern Adventist University.

We are privileged this year to perform the World Premier of Kim AndrĂ© Arnesen's newest choral composition!!! Written for the Southwestern Music Festival, Mr. Arnesen will be here to work with the singers and prepare them for the performance at the Meyerson Symphony Center. Kim AndrĂ© Arnesen (born 28 November 1980) is a Norwegian composer. He is mostly known for his choral compositions, both a cappella, accompanied by piano or organ, or large-scale works for chorus and orchestra. His first CD album "Magnificat" was nominated for GRAMMY Awards 2016 in the category Best Surround Sound Album. His "Cradle Hymn" was a part of the regional Emmy Prize winning show "Christmas in Norway."

The festival also welcomes Dallas Symphony Orchestra principal harpist Emily Levin as this years featured soloist. A Julliard graduate, Ms. Levin is one of the world's premiere harpists, winning the Bronze Medal at the 9th annual USA International Harp Competition. She is also the youngest principal harp of any major orchestra in the United States. Her playing has been praised for its "communicative, emotionally intense expression" (Jerusalem Post) and the Herald Times commended her "technical wizardry and artistic intuition."
